Mr. Pink

I had my second encounter with Steve Buscemi since I’ve been here in Brooklyn. This time though we went beyond mere door holding & polite smile, I waited on him! It was pretty cool and when I went to help the next person in line and saw him standing there I was so happy it was me who got to help him. He ordered a double small cappuccino, a black coffee and we had a small talk about muffins and whether or not he wanted a carrying tray. Not the most exciting chit chat but apparently he is a regular at the cafe so maybe one day I can tell him how big of a fan I am. No one recognized him. I’ve been thinking about what my favorite role of his is, Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, Ghost World, or his parts in Coffee & Cigarettes and Paris J’Taime? and OMG so excited for the new HBO series.

Go Joe

Joe is good: after spending our entire weekend at the shore, we come home late, exhausted, I find this: him making the bed on his own. Clean sheets. A-mazing.

The Pavilion/Inception

(image via google)

We just got back from our local movie theatre, The Pavilion on Prospect Park.  We saw Inception. My mind is literally blown.  Joe is confused. I loved it. I can’t say much else now, I need to sleep on it.    (pun intended)

July 14, 2009

This picture was taken a year ago yesterday. The night before I headed to Heather’s house and we watched Harry Potter and banged out tons of favors for her wedding (salt water taffy wrapped in twine- adorb.) We woke up bright and early and headed into Hoboken, then took the Path into NYC. We shopped at Free People and got lunch at Whole Foods and then headed to Chelsea Market to visit Joe and see a taping of Iron Chef America. Heather teenied the entire time because let’s admit it, she has an unhealthy obsession with Alton Brown. Joe and I were still “new.” I still got nervous every time I saw him, butterflies, the whole schpeal. I thought he was adorable with his little head set on, his jeans and black tee and the converse. Oh, Joe! Four hours later we were able to leave the Iron Chef set and Heather and I decided we really needed to see Harry Potter at midnight. All day we were convincing ourselves that we didn’t need to see it at midnight. That we could wait like adults to see it at a reasonable time. Nope. We needed to see it. We got lattes at Ninth Street Espresso and sat ourselves at a table while Heather called her little brother at home to have him google movie theaters that might not be sold out yet. We finally found one in some random mall and immediately bought four tickets. Yep, Nathan and Joe were being dragged along. Heath and I took a walk on the high line and waited for Joe to get off work. Once he did we all headed back to Hoboken, got in the car and met up with Nathan at a Fridays near the movie theatre. That’s where this picture was taken. We can’t remember what story Joe was telling that embarrassed me this much.. I guess it’s better that way. I just love this picture of us. For Christmas Joe framed it for me and it’s proudly displayed on our mantle right now. Basically, what I am trying to get at is that I never would have thought that in a year we would be where we are now. If you were to tell me that day that in a year we would be living together here in New York City I would have told you to get outta here! I wonder where we will be next year this time.

jersey corn

there is literally nothing like jersey corn. shucking it on the porch after a day at the beach. biting into it fresh off the heat.. melted butter, some salt, some pepper.
when i was a child it was often my job to shuck the corn. always put husks in the bottom of the pot.

The Stinky Story

Sometimes I feel like I talk about my dog too much.  As if I am a crazy Chihuahua lady.  I suppose I sort of am… but just crazy for one specific Chihuahua, my man Stinky.  Still, I figured I’d quickly touch on the reasons why I love my dog as much as I do.  He has been my best friend since 2005, we’ve been through everything together.  In a little over 7 years, we have moved every single year together, travelled all around the New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York area.  Stinky has lived such an exciting, fast paced life with me- and he has been such a champ.  He is sort of a legend, every time I see someone I haven’t talked to in a while they say “How are you, How is Stinky?!”   Sometimes Stink gets a bad rap because he has the typical Chihuahua issues.  Very insecure, territorial, and will bite you if you upset him.  Little kids always want to touch him, I always have to say “oh no, I’m sorry! he is a grumpy doggie” but then he just barks at them more, like a maniac.  I am terrified of him getting loose and biting someone who tries to help him.  To me, he is the sweetest.  He cuddles with me and sleeps with his head next to mine on the pillow.  I cradle him like a baby and he snorts and gives me kisses.  He loves to be under the covers and behind my legs or under my butt.  He is a little lump.  Joe calls him a loaf of bread.   I am crazy about this dog, he is a little monster, but he is mine all mine.

I made a myspace account for him years ago. Check out the comments, they are so sweet!  I once even had a birthday party in just his honor and about 25 of his friends showed up.  I took him to meet Hanson when he was a brand new puppy.   He has walked with Pat Burrell’s (Phillies, Tampa Bay Ray’s) english bulldogs.  Mark Wahlberg has waved to Stink.  He has gotten more kisses from the ladies then most men I know.  He sings along with you, and howls.  If he is really excited he will just totally lose it and scream and wail and bark and hop around, it’s really adorable. Sometimes he makes sounds like a dolphin, or a bird.  He loves cheese and dreaming.  His best friend is Mandy’s dog, Bailey.  His girlfriend is Joe’s Granny’s dog, Abbie.  He loves long walks on the beach, light taps on his bulbous skull and burrowing into warm necks.  He also has the cutest teeny tiny crooked bottom teeth.  Okay, I’m done. I think.

Also, I found this compilation of nicknames I had for Stinky back in 2005.  Am I officially insane?

-nuh-nuh, nimbles, mumbles, minka, the stank, beautiful, the most beautiful, the most beautiful little man ever, the most beautiful little nuh nuh in existence, stinka minka, stinka minka moo moo, adorable, adorable little puppy man, the most adorable, baby boy, my beauitful pup, the baby, the most beautiful baby, nee-nee, little monster, nuh-nuh muh-muh cha-cha, my most beautiful little man in the whole wide world, heater man, the most beautiful and heated little heater man evA!, choochoo moomoo, puppy man, the best puppy man in the whole wide world, teddy boy, CUTEST!, cutest man, cutest man in the whole wide world.

“Death by AC unit”

Wish us luck.  We just installed a sort of shady window unit the previous tenant left here.  We are afraid of it falling out and killing someone. damn heat wave!!!

UPDATE:
AC Unit = success. as in it hasn’t killed someone … yet …
East Bound and Down marathon = happening.
Joe going to Clemen’s to get his girl burritos, guac & beer = the best.

“shall we oscillate this bitch?” – joe, about a fan.

The Fourth in Boston

We left Bar Harbor early this morning.  I was very emotional, leaving my Mom was not easy.  She and I both acted like everything was okay until it really became time for Joe and I to leave.  It was a lot of tears. I’d never been this far away from her for such an extended period of time.  I am a Mama’s Girl.

The drive was actually really fun.  We just danced and sang the entire time then all of a sudden- we were in Boston! First stop was my good friend Whitney’s apartment to unload, shower, and relax.  Eventually Whit, Joe and I went to Newbury area and got a few drinks, then wandered over to Sylvi’s workplace, The Summer Shack.  We ate a lot of seafood and drank a lot of beers.

After Sylvi got off work we all headed to her favorite bar, Goody Glovers.  Drank more. I think we all see where this is going.  We woke up the next morning, feeling it.  Whitney came over looking oh so fresh faced (how she does it, I don’t know)  We walked over to The Living Room and met up with Krystal!  Fun Fact: Krystal, Whitney, Sylvi and I all met online when we were 13 – 15 years old.  We are lucky if there are more then 2 of us together once a year!   The story of that will come soon.  It’s fun.  So, my head started to feel better after I drank some “Super Mimosas” – orange vodka, OJ, strawberry puree & champagne.  They were exactly what we needed.

Later, we found ourselves at the North End Pool.  This place is perfect for a hot summer day in the city.  It’s on the water edge, clean, and has fun snacks like peanut butter & fluff for sale.   I wish I could find a place like this in Brooklyn!  It was the 4th of July, so I was itching for some fireworks.. we ended up finding ourselves at a rooftop party, where two sets of fireworks were in eyeshot.  At this point, Joe and I were exhausted.  We got on a bus the next morning at 6am and were dropped at Penn Station by 11.  It felt so good to be home.

Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine

this summer my mom decided she had to get away.   she has been through some hard times in new jersey the past few years, and really just needed a place to re-coop and gather her thoughts.  my Aunt (her sister) lives in bar harbor, maine.  if you have been there, you know how beautiful it is.  if you haven’t, I would highly recommend visiting.  it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. the fresh air, colors, food, community, water, rocks, nature, amazing homes, I could go on and on. it’s just great.

luckily my aunt’s home is not only in a prime location but also has an attached apartment she was looking to rent for the season.   my mom really wasn’t sure about how she would travel there, and knew she couldn’t drive herself. of course Joe and I offered to drive her up there.

We had nothing else going on, we both love driving, and most importantly we both love my mom. she came here early wednesday morning, ready to load us up and get going. she also had her two adult cats, who are not used to road travel.  the cats weren’t that happy with the trip. luckily we made it in one straight shot with no problems, took about 10 hours.  once we got to Bar Harbor we were exhausted but so excited to stretch our legs and, well, get a beer.  we took a walk downtown in time to see the last few minutes of a setting sun.  once the sun was all the way down, we found ourselves at Lompoc Cafe. my aunt highly recommended it to us, for a non-touristy laid back spot.  non-touristy is right! even with exact directions from someone we were still confused as to if we were making the correct turns.  it’s down a small road set in a few blocks from Main St, but was perfect.  we sat at the bar and had friendly service and a few local beers.  perfect nightcap for us.  at this point we were just so excited to start the next day.  I think we set out alarm for 6 a.m.  we weren’t missing anytime on this trip.

the first full day Joe and I set out with no idea of where we were going.  Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island, and it’s just all so beautiful.  we knew if we drove long enough in any direction we would hit water, or find something interesting.  we ended up hitting Seal Harbor.  a small village with some of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen.  we walked around on a little beach then got back in the car and headed up road that looked promising.  it lead us nowhere fast but we kept with it and eventually spotted a small pull of that had a sign reading “Cooks Overlook”  perfect! after walking down a man made path/maze we ended up one of the the chilliest, magnificent cliffs.  it was perfect.  it was deserted.  there was a rainbow and the bluest water as far as we could see.  we sat there for about an hour, then headed back into town.  in the town of Bar Harbor there is a path that runs along the ocean called the “Shore Path.”  it’s a loose gravel windy path with beautiful homes to one side and a beautiful view to the other.  seriously, the houses are ridiculous! I want to live or at least stay in one of them for an extended period of time.  we ended up finding our way home to my Aunt’s house for a lovely steak dinner.  ended off the night with a must-visit to Ben & Bills Chocolate Emporium, for some of the finest ice cream in Maine.  it was a very successful, yet tiring day.   our bed welcomed us well that night.

we stopped in New Hampshire for some grub. check out our packed vehicle.

finally! felt so good to see this sign, even though we were still about 5 hours from our destination.

this was not a sunset to miss.

I just love daisies. an entire hill was covered in them, I made Joe pull over so I could take pictures.

we walked past this house on our way to the Shore Path. we also decided that this is a dream home.

a perfect summer supper

AAAh, waking up this morning was so perfect. The cool mornings here are extremely refreshing in comparison to muggy hot tri-state temperatures. There is also something so perfect about the humidity here. It’s doing great things for my skin and my hair . This would be our last day in Maine, so we wanted to make the most of it. I also wanted to really head into Acadia National Park and show Joe some of my favorites places to go.

First stop was Sand Beach. The only real “beachy” feel in the park, paired with water that is basically freezing, about 45 degrees. The hike we took to reach the beach was long and we were sweating, Joe said he was going to jump right into the ocean. I just looked at him. He didn’t believe me how cold it was. One foot in this water and your entire body will immediately cool down. I lived in Bar Harbor for an entire summer when I was in my teens and I think I only really went “under” in the water here twice, it’s that cold. After Sand Beach we headed to Thunder Hole. My favorite. Thunder Hole is a natural formation of rocks where the ocean water spills into and creates a loud “thunder” boom and a huge rush of water. We had a meek day to visit Thunder Hole. Water was hardly even making a splash.

We were feeling malnourished and tired so we hiked back. We saw an old couple pull up in their camper, slowly fetch their folding chairs from the inside and carefully walked onto the cliffs. The woman stayed near the top and the old man made his way so slowly down near the edge. It’s such a beautiful view, and they both sat separately, eating their sandwiches. Joe and I watched the whole thing, it was that adorable. I love cute old couples, maybe a bit too much.

Once back in town, we stopped at a place around the corner and had a few appetizers and beers. Got tired, went back to the house and took a nap. We had reservations that evening a downtown restaurant, Gaylen’s. They have a covered porch with three or four tables set up, I’d recommend a reservation for one of these tables, around sunset. The food was fresh and delicious and the service was impressive. My Mom joined us and we shared a bottle of white wine. Walked home, hung out, had one final hang session.

Dear Food Network,

Dear Food Network,
I have a bone to pick with you. I think you are trying to steal my boyfriend. You run late on filming on a regular basis, you make him come in early and leave late. You feed him meals so when he comes home he isn’t hungry when I am. I think you are trying to come in between us and I am less then thrilled about this. Since you are crucial to our survival I have stayed quiet about this, but I gotta let you know.. I am counting the days until you and your buddy Iron Chef are out of our lives for a little bit. I used to think you were cool and sometimes I even DVR’ed you, but I’m over it. You get on my nerves!! Stop being so intrusive you super popular tv network and employed of my lovey! Thanks, maybe we can be friends again in late August but I’ll prob be mad at you a week later when he starts work again.
Sincerely, Ashley.
